phrasal verbs

Phrasal verbs are two- or three-word verbs like “sit down” or “look forward to.” They are especially important for learning everyday (colloquial) English and business English. Estimates on the number of phrasal verbs vary, but there are several thousand.

I am offering phrasal verbs lessons to intermediate and advanced learners of English, using my own materials for the first two lessons.  After that, we will use the nine phrasal verbs chapters in a popular grammar book (which you can find at the public library here).

If you would like to study phrasal verbs more, then we can use a useful American English phrasal verbs book that is for high-intermediate and advanced learners. This book is available on Amazon.ca for about $25 plus tax and shipping. The book comes with answers. It covers hundreds of phrasal verbs, with thousands of different meanings. Please click here for the link to the book.

Rate: $35/hour (student) and $40/hour (regular)* (a one-hour lesson and 30 minutes of preparation by me)

Although it can be helpful to learn phrasal verbs on your own with a book or an online resource, working with me will give you plenty of practice with them in different situations. As a result, you will be able to use them with confidence.

The lessons will focus on improving your speaking, but you can also improve your listening, reading, and writing as well as your pronunciation and grammar.  However, each student is different, so you can choose what to focus on.

I have interesting, helpful, and individualized exercises that will give you a lot of speaking practice. Depending on the materials/books we use, you will practice with the following exercises: synonyms (where you replace words with a phrasal verb that means the same thing), antonyms (where you replace words with a phrasal verb that has the opposite meaning), personal questions based on your life, anecdotes (short, personal stories that are interesting or funny), dialogues, and pictures.  I also have some error correction exercises, where you will try to find mistakes, and finish-the-sentence exercises. We can also review regularly.

Each phrasal verbs lesson takes at least 30 minutes. If you would like to add another 30 minutes to practice everyday conversation with me, the cost is $35 for 1 hour. This price includes 30 minutes of preparation on my end and homework on your end.

During the free first lesson (1 hour), we can get to know each other better and see if we are a good student-tutor match. I will also introduce you to my way of teaching phrasal verbs.
