How can an ESL tutor help you?

English is the lingua franca in the world these days, which means that it’s the main language for communication. If you want to pass standardized tests (like the CELPIP or IELTS*), be successful working in an English-speaking environment, travel, and understand movies, tutoring can be an important part of reaching your English goals.

Taking English classes at a language school is a very common way to learn English. However, maybe you feel that your English classes aren’t helping you enough with your English, especially if your level is intermediate or advanced. Or maybe you don’t have the time, money, or desire to attend a language school.

Whatever your situation, if you need to improve your English, learning with an experienced ESL tutor is a convenient, comfortable way to really improve your English. Think of a tutor as a personal English coach who finds out about you–your level, goals, learning style, interests, and life experience–and teaches you in a way that will work best for you.

Here are some quick facts about learning English with me.

About me:

  • I am a professional ESL tutor with over 25 years’ teaching experience.
  • I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature, a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate, and a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate. I also have Canadian Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) Instructor Training – Level 1 and Level 2 (Advanced) certificates.
  • I am a native speaker of Canadian English. My accent is very similar to the standard American English accent.
  • Please go to about Sarah for more information about me.

About my lessons:

  • I tutor everyday (colloquial) English, business/professional, and academic English. I can also help you prepare for such tests as the CELPIP, Duolingo, and IELTS.*
  • I specialize in teaching speaking and writing. However, I can also help you improve your listening, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, phrasal verbs, and idioms because all skills are interconnected.
  • I am very interested in helping my students with their speaking. I enjoy helping them find their “voice” in English so that they can communicate with more confidence.
  • I offer special speaking lessons on phrasal verbs for high-intermediate and advanced learners.
  • Please go to speaking and writing for more information.

About tutoring:

  • I have two types of lessons, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 lessons, which I don’t prepare for (so you choose the content, with my help), are $25/hour (student) and $30/hour (regular) .** Type 2 lessons, which I prepare for and/or give homework for, are $45/hour (student) and $50/hour (regular) .** The price for Type 2 lessons includes one hour of preparation as well as a one-hour lesson.
  • I usually recommend one to three lessons per week.
  • My schedule is from 12 pm to 9 pm AST/ADT (Atlantic Standard Time/Atlantic Daylight Time), Monday to Friday, for in-person and online lessons. I also work on Saturday from 12 pm to 6 pm. If you don’t live in Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island, please click here for a time zone conversion website. Halifax, where I live, is listed as Canada – Nova Scotia – Halifax.
  • I tutor online from my home office.  I find online lessons more convenient, private, and, most importantly, effective than in-person lessons.
  • I accept payment via e-transfer and PayPal (with your own account or a credit card).
  • Please go to faq for more details.

About my students:

  • I help adults (18 years and older) who are professionals, language school students, international students, permanent residents, and others.
  • I specialize in intermediate and advanced students only. I don’t tutor beginners, as they don’t have the knowledge that is necessary to benefit from my lessons. If you aren’t sure what level you are, please contact me so that I can give you a grammar and vocabulary test to assess your level.
  • Please go to testimonials to read what my students have said about me.

“The lessons were stress-free, so I didn’t even feel as if I was studying. But after each lesson, I could definitely feel that my English had improved. She makes her students feel comfortable and confident.” Seong-Su, Korea
